My music video, 'I'm Alive' has been posted to YouTube!  You may view it at this link, or watch the embedded video below.  Enjoy!

This was a music video assignment in my Intro. to Video class at Savannah College of Art and Design. It was one of my most planned-out and pre-visualized film projects ever, and the result was almost an exact reflection of my original vision. In this story, two young women, who have both endured trials in their pasts, meet in college and help each other to start a new life. This video was edited to Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, and Howe's 'I'm Alive'.

Written, directed, produced, and edited by Areya Simmons.

Special Thanks To:

*Bijani Casalan
*Kamille Dawkins
*Wesley Terpstra and his wife, Ashley who let us film in their apartment
*Shay, the adventurous cat from the video.

Thanks!!! You guys are awesome!

September 21st

I am BACK at the Savannah College of Art and Design!!!  I started my second year at SCAD on September 15th, and the first week went very smoothly.   I do not have any film production classes this quarter, so you probably won't see any new samples of my work any time soon.  HOWEVER, I plan on posting two of my videos from last year up on YouTube as well as this site very soon.   You can already see screencaps from those videos in the Gallery, from 'I'm Alive' and 'The Hero Path'.

MANY events are coming up here at SCAD, and I intend to take pictures at as many as I can, especially the SAVANNAH FILM FESTIVAL coming in October!  I will post the pictures in the galleries as quickly as I can.  In the meantime, enjoy the screencaps.

Tomorrow is the first day of fall, and I must say that I had an incredible summer, the events of which could easily fill up a book.  One of the biggest highlights was a film internship in Pittsburgh, PA.  I happily worked in three departments on the production of 'In Northwood', which lasted four weeks.  I will be speaking about my internship experience as a panelist at SCAD's annual Sophomore Networking Socials on October 2nd at Oglethorpe House.  I encourage all Film and Television and Sound Design students, regardless of your year, to attend and make new connections with one another!

I need to get back to my school work, but you can look forward to my videos as well as photos from upcoming events!  Thank you for all of your continued support!

All the best,
Areya Simmons

Harry Potter 7 Anniversary Party - Women Authors and Conservation

Subscribe to The Falcon and the Dove!

The Falcon and the Dove is BACK this week to celebrate the one year anniversary of the release of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows', as well as the 10-year anniversary of the release of the first book in the United States!  We held this workshop at the Eastside Borders in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where, as most of you know, is where we held the Midnight release party for the seventh book one full year ago.  That party attracted over 600 people as we brought in the Midnight hour on the night of July 20th, 2007!

On July 19th of THIS year, we held this anniversary workshop, and also discussed the lives and conservation efforts of J.K. Rowling, Rachel Carson, and Beatrix Potter.  The efforts of these women authors changed (and are still changing) the lives of many for the better, at the same time as improving our planet.  All three of these women encountered large amounts of adversity, for their ideas, their gender, their classes, and their dreams.  All of them overcame, and this workshop was a celebration of them.  We hope you enjoy!

- Overview of disussion.

- We and our audience discuss our feelings on the 10-year anniversary of Harry Potter, our favorite characters, and our favorite passages.

- We cover the impact that these women's works have made on us individually and the world population as a whole.

- We highlight Beatrix Potter and discuss her life and achievements.

- We talk about Rachel Carson's biography, the adversity she encountered at the time of her writing of the bestseller, 'Silent Spring', and her further accomplishments.

- We get into an in-depth discussion of society's past views of women, the ridiculous conclusions that have been made about them (some of them made by high-ranking people), and how we can change the negativity.

- We ask our audience what their favorite stories are.

- Finally, Dove (Areya) reads 3 excerpts from 3 of the Harry Potter books:  'Sorcerer's Stone', 'Goblet of Fire', and 'Deathly Hallows'.  We discuss each passage in-depth following each reading.

- During these discussions, we touch on another fantasy tale, 'The Neverending Story', and its similarities to 'Harry Potter'.

- We say farewell, leaving our audience and ourselves exhilarated and hopeful for the future, of literature, and of our environment.

July 9th and July 10th

On these days 3 years ago, Kristen Nicole Zubek and Stephanie Michelle Roman, respectfully, passed away from a car accident at nighttime. They were best friends as well as friends to everyone at Shade Central City High School and around the Somerset area.

Their smiles and personalities were the most memerable.  To this day, they are still loved, they are still missed, and they are still changing the lives of others through a scholarship fund set up in their names.

I, myself was in Florida for a golf tournament at the time of this tragedy, and thus did not hear the news until a week later, when we returned. It saddened me that I could not attend the funeral, but I was later able to pay my respects.

On this day, I encourage everyone who knew Kristen and Stephanie to always hold them in your hearts and memories, and move on with their spirits. They will always be with us, and they will always be remembered.

Rest in peace, Kristen and Stephanie.

They are here at last!  Screencaps from some of my best work, created in my first year at Savannah College of Art and Design!

The first album of screencaps is from a music video I wrote, produced, filmed, and edited for an Introduction to Video Production project.

The second album of screencaps is from my Introduction to Video Production class Final, entitled 'The Hero Path'.  It is a narrative about how a jacket connects and affects the lives of 4 people, along with a 'Hero's Journey' parallel.

Here are photos from the latest event I attended!  The Onyx Awards sponsored by the African American Council of The Arts took place June 27th, 2008 at the Radisson Hotel in Monroeville, Pennsylvania.  My mother and I were in attendance to support African American talent in theatre and film.  Lamman Rucker from Tyler Perry's 'Why Did I Get Married' was a special guest and received an award from the AACTA.  It was a very positive experience and we met many talented and inspiring people.

Great news!!!  Our friends Mark, Ben, and Julie (Your Environmental Road Trip, YERT) have completed their journey across all 50 states.  The Falcon and the Dove followed the first steps of their road trip as they took off July 4th, 2007.  It has truly been an incredible ride for them as they have tried to spread environmental awareness and learn what each state is doing for the planet.  Read all about their journey and their grand finish below.

Happy July everyone!!!  I hope your summer is going well.  I know the gas prices can be a huge headache, but hang in there!

As many of you have been asking for this, I thought I would post my Proclamation from the City of Pittsburgh that I received June 12th of 2007.  It was an incredible experience to have my accomplishments acknowledged by the Pittsburgh City Council.  I can hardly believe that it has been over a year since that special day.

I think I had originally posted an actual photo of the Proclamation itself, but now, you can all see it in writing in this PDF from the City of Pittsburgh Official website.  Thank you so much for all of your encouragement, congratulations, support, and love over these many years.  It has truly helped me become the person I am today.  You know who you are.

Photos Galore!!!  I have at last found a solution to my photo gallery issue!  I have decided to use Facebook's public album feature since it is a lot easier to upload photos on mass to Facebook than it is to type the HTML code for every single image I have to put them directly on this site.  The links I will post will go straight to the Facebook photo albums, and you can view all future pictures there.  THERE IS NO NEED TO SIGN UP FOR A FACEBOOK ACCOUNT TO VIEW THE PHOTOS.  Just click on the links I provide here on the Home Page.

In the Gallery section of this site will be a list of all of the Facebook photo album links, which will make all future viewing of images infinitely simpler.  The old images that I already wrote the code for will still be there.

So to kick off this new method of viewing images from AreyaSimmons.Com, here are FOUR albums worth of images from the event I went to this weekend, which was a walking event!

THE LONGEST WALK 2 - 1978 - 2008

A large group of Native Americans are making the journey from San Franciso, CA to Washington D.C.! They started on February 11th, and they will finish at the nation's capital July 11, 2008. They made the walk before in 1978, and this is the 30 year anniversary! They walked through Pittsburgh the weekend of June 14th, and I, Areya Simmons, walked with them with my godfather, Miguel. We are walking for peace, sovereignty, world cooperation, and environmental protection. We have gathered Proclamations from many states as well as media attention. Please wish the group good luck on the rest of their long journey. Thank you!

Enjoy!

June 11th

I have officially completed my first year at Savannah College of Art & Design!!!  May 29th was the last day of classes, and I have since settled back in here in Pittsburgh, PA!  I now have a summer job at a wonderful production house, doing what I do best:  video, web, and graphic design!  I have many new opportunities to expand my creative horizons in photography, graphic design, web design, and sound design this summer, and I look forward to all of them.

I'm also going to focus on developing this website further, starting with putting my work portfolio from this past academic year up in the Work section (currently under construction).  Ideally, I will have my work in a 'click-through' Quicktime Movie, so you can literally click through a professionally presented portfolio, complete with graphic design and video samples!

April 12th

The Photo Gallery is finally up!  This is simply a more organized way to view my photos.  The original galleries are still intact, and feel free to
